it should tell you in your owners manual. it is not very difficult to do make sure rear window is down . there should be a small access panel near the back of the top that has the plug for the third brake light(if equipped) remove cover and unplug conector. remove the bolts attaching the top to the body you may need three friends to help lift the top off the truck (one at each corner) as these are heavy. you may want to buy a replacement seal that goes between the top and body because if the top has never been removed it may be worn and leak when the top is reinstalled these are still available from ford.

Well first off you must consider your drive line , if your transmission is not capable of harnessening the HP upgrades you will only burn it out.
Second the straight 6 is not a "preformance" motor, but it is a huge 6 cylinder designed with massive power for it's size.
80% of Semi Trucks have a Straight 6 (big ones)
The V8 ,5.0 is a 302 , the straight I.L.6, 4.9 is a 300. The pistons are larger then the V8's
There is not many mods you can do really worth the money.
However you can free-up a lot of the power robbing componets off of the motor. They do not help the engine and are only emissions componets .
The first is the engine driven fan, replace it for an electric. and you can bolt one that will fit from another car at a junk yard.
I have a 5.0 , but the electric fan is off of a 2.5 cutless motor. and you have the same radiator as I do. It cost me $20 to compleatly put it in.
You can also remove the smog pump and shorten the belt , this will free up the power of turning the pump and raise the speed of the belt turning the ALT and Water pump at idle slightly.
We have vent windows so I removed my AC that kept leaking also, but you will need a replacement pully to do this $20.
Also get rid of the EGR system (this will cost you a small MPG decrease) , but it takes the leaning effect the ERG produces , and acctually cools the engine internally by running a richer mixture. If you remove the EGR you will have to seal up (block off) the mounting holes and pipe.
As far as getting more speed , you will have to give to get.
Like putting in a 4:10 ring and pinion gear in your truck.
You will be like lightning getting to 70-80 mph. But you will give up your top end speed . Your truck will be trying to blow itself up a 80mph.(RPMS will be well maxed out) But by just changing the gear in the rear end , you can greatly increase your bottom end launching speed with no alterations to the motor at all. Same with putting a higher gear , Your truck can do 200 Mph , but it will be REALLY slow taking off from a stop.
You will have to give to get.........Presently your trucks gears are in the "middle" .
