How is big rig windshield care different from regular care?
- Semi truck drivers are taught to avoid following other big rigs that tend to kick up rocks on low-quality highways and roadways.
- Prevention is important and truck drivers comprehend that. Because of this, they typically park in protected areas.
- Your big rig windshield cracks or chips are fixed as soon as possible.

Dodge Ram 1500 97' And 98' Headlight Assemblys Interchangable?
Hey Everyone. I Have A 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 And I Noticed While Changing The Battery That My Left Headlight Bulb Had Come Loose And Layed Against The Plastic That Normally Holds It In And Melted It. I Believe That I'Ll Need To Replace That Whole Case. I Think It'S Called The Headlight Assembly. It'S The Clear Plastic In Front And The Black Plastic That Wraps Around Back And Holds The Bulb.
Advanced Auto Want $145 For A New One. I Found A Salvage Yard That Has The 97' Pulled For $75. They Also Have A U-Pull-It Section Of Their Business And They Have A 98' Dodge And He Believes They'Re Interchangable With The 97'S. My Question Is, Is This True, Can I Take The Headlight Assembly Off The 98' And Put It On My 97'? It Would Only Cost Me About $20 There.
Also, I Hear It'S A Common Problem With My Truck, But The Dash Board (What I Call The Horizontal Part Under The Winshield That You Set All Your Crap On) Has Cracked Into Several Pieces Having Started At The Screw Wholes And Worked Out. It'S Gotten Worse Recently And I'M Looking To Replace It. Are Those Interchangeable If This 98' Is The Correct Color?
Lastly, What Tools Will I Need To Remove These Head Light Assemblies And Dashboards Easily. It Appear That On My Truck, The Head Light Assembly Will Come Off If You Remove Two Bolts On The Radiator Side Of The Head Light And A Single Small Screw Underneath The Headlight On The Outside. Then There Is A Rubber Thing Hooked Over Some Tabs On The Infront Of Those Two Bolts. I Think It Would Pop Out Then, But I'M Not Sure And I Don'T Know If The 98' Is The Same. I Haven'T Even Looked At How To Get The Dashboard Off. There Are Screws Near The Windshield, But I Don'T Know How You Get It Unhooked After That. Thank You For All The Help.
Yes to all. Yes, you can even do it to a 94'. It won't matter about the housing since it never changed and they built that body style from 94' - 02', they are all exactly identical to each. The only thing you can't swap onto your truck is the quad beam headlights that the Sport models received.
To remove those you'll need a 3/8 socket, because there are 3 bolts that hold it on, the tiny screw there is to swing the turn lens outward so it's not a PITA to change the bulbs.
So yeah, about that dashboard, LMCtruck.com has replacements for our trucks, factory colors too; and that's a common problem with ALL OF THEM, they all inevitably WILL break. Windshields too.
Moving on, here's where it's gonna get a bit complicated, in mid 98', the dashboard changed to the newer rounded style, so typically anything before mid 98' (as they call it in the aftermarket) is what you'll need on the interior if anything else breaks.
To remove it, it will require you to park the truck on flat ground, e-brake it, pull the steering column down ALL the way and put the trans into 1. This will allow you to remove the trim. Next, extend the cup holder and there will be two screws there. Take those out, next do the same to the ashtray and voila you can now fully remove the trim. It's just a snap in, so little effort is required to pull it off.
Now the best part, you're going to need a 5/16 socket for the bolts/screw on the top, near the windshield. Lastly, unscrew the screws that were under the trim piece and it will easily come out. Like no joke, it'll just lift off.
A helpful tip, EVERYTHING on the outside is interchangeable with our trucks. Doesn't matter the year, what matters on the year is the interior. Apart from that, they are pretty simple to work on.
Hope this helps.

1988 Ford Ranger Which Parts Do You Recommend I Make Sure Is Replaced To Keep Her Running Beautifully?

What Can You Think Of That I Should Maybe Replace On My Truck Because Of Its Age? (Serious Answers Only Please) Thank You.
Have More Than One Answer? Please, List All You Can Think Of. ......
Electronic, Hoses, Or Just Some Easily Forgotten Parts. Anything Thank You!
Spark plugs, wires, and distributor cap
Flush your cooling system
Make sure brake fluid level is up
Power steering fluid
Transmission fluid is up and doesn't smell burnt. Might be a good idea to have a drain and refill/filter change anyways considering it's age.
Make sure all your ball joints, tie rod ends, and steering rack (maybe) are greased and not in need of replacement.
Best bet: call around to your local service shops, not Midas or Jiffy Lube, but locally owned and reputable. Ask them what all they do in an oil change service. At my shop, an oil change service is a big deal.
Check all fluids (winterization check as well)
Drain oil, new filter
Check all tire pressures
Check wheel bearings, tie rods, ball joints for wear
Grease u-joints (if applicable)
Smaller, locally owned shops that are recommended are more likely to treat you right because they understand that a return customer will bring in a lot more money than if we just charged you a bunch of money for something you didn't actually need up front anyways.
Is It Cheaper To Go To A Junkyard?
For A New Windshield, If I Can Get The Labor Done For Cheap?
Or Should I Just Start Saving A Few Hundred, And Get A New Windshield Before Winter? I Have A Crack In The Middle Bottom, That Spread Clear To Both Sides Of My Window. And Now I Have A Chip Smack In The Center Or My Windshield, Thats Slowly Starting To Spread. Its Illegal To Drive With A Cracked Windshield As Well, I Think (Washington?) But Can I Really Get Pulled Over For It?
Yes, you can get pulled over for a cracked window. The police view it as a visual obstruction. They will give you a warning and it will say you have 7 days to fix your windshield. You have the company fixing the windshield sign warning ticket and you mail it back. But of coarse this is what will happen if you get pulled over. Hopefully the officer is nice enough to just give you a warning. This happened to me a few months ago with my truck. First, CALL your insurance company and see if this is covered under your policy comprehensive I think. If not, depending on your vehicle it may cost 150-maybe 200 dollars. I had them come to my house and my ford ranger windshield replacement only dented my pocketbook by 167.74 this included tax and labor. As far as going to a junk yard. It may cost you more in the long run since you have to first locate a windshield in the junk yard, then have someone remove the windshield, then remove your windshield and install it. Labor cost could be crazy! Not to mention if you have to transport it. When you have it professionally installed it comes with a warranty. Good luck!!!
