I'm from Edmonton... Technically the rule is that it is illegal to drive with any obstruction in the drivers view. That being said, a Crack located on the drivers side, even if it doesn't interfere with your view is actually against the law.

It's also considered a Hazard because a cracked windshield is compromised, and could potentially cause injury to the driver and passengers should a rock or something else come into contact with the windshield while driving.

Assuming you have comprehensive insurance most states will allow you to fix it for free. Generally what happens with a small crack is the company applies resin or some sort of material that bonds with the glass. Regardless of insurance it should be quite cheap to repair.

If you have 'full' coverage (colliison & comprehensive / fire & theft), you most certainly can claim both of those.

You can't claim them both at once, however, because they were separate losses and will be covered under separate coverages. The tree will be treated as a single-vehicle accident (and an at fault one) covered under Collision, and the glass will just be a windshield claim (not at fault) covered under Comprehensive. Yes you'll need to pay two deductibles (see notes below), because you've got two different claims from two different types of damage that occurred on different dates. It's a technical legal thing.

To claim them both together, you'd have to cook up a convincing story as to how your rear body was damaged and the windshield crack occurred at the same time from the same occurrence. That would actually be claims fraud if you do it, so you don't wanna do it.

THE NOTES BELOW: Deductibles can often be negotiable. A deductible isn't the part you pay, it's the part the insurer doesn't. They don't care who covers the deductible as long as it isn't them, so some repair shops will offer to cut you a break and pay your deductible or part of it. Ask nicely if they can cut you a deal, and they might say yes. The insurer won't mind, and you'll save some money. But remember to ask nicely.
