I am surprised to find Sonata in India. It is a large car. I live near Sacramento, California, USA. Have 49,000 miles on 2006 Sonata and now 33,000 on 2008. no problems except the front suspension does make a funny click noise when turning. The oil filter is not in a metal jacket and should be less expensive to buy for this reason. The 2006 car had a yellow caution light once in a while. Re-starting the car always cured this.

I Have A 1998 Chevy Cavalier W/ A Head Problem. I Now Have Antifreeze In The Oil. I'M Not Sure If I Should Pump Money Into It. I Was Thinking Of Putting One Of Those Head Sealers In And Praying For Another Year, Or Put A Grand Or 2 Into It And Drive It For The Next 10. Do You Guys Think That Those Head Sealers Work Or Am I Just Prolonging Fixing The Problem?

The car is not worth spending any money on and here is why.

The vehicle obviously ran hot. The fan/relay had a problem on these cars. If it was just a head gasket it would be different. The problem is that the head is probably cracked. I have only tore down one that was not cracked and the driver saw the vehicle was overheating and shut it down.

I ran a wet and dry compression test and found a problem. I pulled the head and had it tested for cracks This is cheaper on a metal head but more expensive on an aluminum head. The head was not cracked but was warped and had to be milled. I tested and replaced the fan relay, replaced the plugs, flushed the engine(antifreeze is not good in oil), changed the oil and filter, and flushed the radiator and refilled with antifreeze and replaced the timing belt.

The repairs were somewhat expensive but would have been considerably higher if the head was cracked. Also there is a chance that the top of the block could be warped, or a cylinder wall cracked.

You can use good sealer(Bars stop leak) that uses liquid glass for a very temporary crutch. However, if the head is cracked or the head gasket is blown from an oil jacket to a water jacket that is near the combustion chamber you will have from 95 to 120 lbs. of compression to contend with. This is hard to seal off and will simply blow out again. This will also pump compression into the radiator and produce an air lock that will prevent the fan from working.

Asides from all this there may still be the issue of why the problem arose anyway. It could be(unless you fixed it) the thermostat, fan relay, temp sensor, or even the water pump.

Now, aside from all that, this vehicle may have a plastic radiator. These can be damaged long before the head gasket or head blows. When they crack the fan can NOT work as there will be a constant air lock.

When you add the possibility of the possible extent of damage, and I can assure you that you may learn the hard way, the vehicle is not worth the heartache.

If you know someone that can pull the head so you can have it tested it might help. If the head and radiator is damaged you are looking at a few hundred dollars without even considering repairs.

You can buy a used radiator and head at a salvage yard but had better spend some to have them both tested and have an agreement that you can return either if bad. You still have the fact that a cylinder wall can be cracked.

Here is the deal: The engine, and especially head, in this vehicle did not earn any awards for for mechanical soundness. They run so-so at best and can be fickle when sick. When the engine over heats enough to crack a head(and this does not take a lot) there is usually damage to the cylinder walls and or the rings. If you have a cracked head and replace it you now have a good head on a weak lower end and the life will not be very long for the expense.

Now, you could replace the whole engine with one from a vehicle you saw run and not smoke or overheat. You still have to check the radiator as they tend to die easy. If this was possible and you just dearly love the vehicle because of some reason it might be worth it to you.

However, you can buy a vehicle in a lot better shape in the 2 to 3 grand range.

You could aways find one just like yours that runs good and does not overheat and have a lot of spare parts or you could sell it at a salvage yard for about $150.00 to $200.00 if the converter is good.
