Windshield Repairs in Summit Hill Pennsylvania

Your windshield does not belong with the mysterious, under hood components. Much like other aspects in life, when your windshield is working correctly, we don't ever think about it. On the other hand, when there is an issue, it ends up being an urgent problem.

Windshield glass is a sort of laminated glass. They are fabricated using a layering method. The outer layers are glass and the inner layer is a significant laminate.

The middle layer of the windshields are is often made from a vinyl plastic material. In simple words, it is a very tough plastic. The laminate serves as a sticking board for the inner and outer layer of glass. This serves to hold both layers together and gives a surface in the event of shattering for glass fragments to adhere to.

Cars that are newly assembled have windshields installed by robots in the manufacturing facility. This is a tightly controlled and monitored setting. When accomplished this way, the fit is very exact. Learn more about Summit Hill best windshield repair company from your local repair professional.

Damaged windshields are a safety risk, therefore they need to be fixed once there are any indications of damage. Due the tight installation procedure as described previously, the very best strategy is to have the fix done on the original windshield, in place. If the damage is a small-scale chip or crack, this is possible. This is not possible if the crack has elongated, if the chip is in the car driver's field of view or the chip is bigger that a coin.

Currently there are various windshield repair kits on the market that handy individuals can choose to fix their own windshields. We realize that this is an appealing option for many. Yet, because of the safety concerns, we encourage that even these types of simple repairs be taken care of by an auto glass technician.

Many times, car drivers will brush off a tiny chip. This is a bad idea. Little chips can quickly develop into larger issues that require a full replacement.

Window Motor Replacement On 2000 Van?
How Hard Is It To Replace The Power Window Motor On A 2000 Gmc Safarri Van. Any Tips Are Greatly Appreciated

Remove the door panel on the offending door

Step Two After you have your door panel off, you will see a thick plastic covering that is covering everything on the door. This is merely held on by some glue, and can be pulled off.

Step Three After that nasty plastic is gone, your door panel will be exposed. You will see a metal brace, a few holes (lower right and upper middle) and then a lot of rivets. About ten of these rivets are what are holding your window motor and regulator onto the car.

Step Four Before your begin to remove any rivets, tape your window in the all the way up “position.” This way, when you do start drilling or punching out the rivets, your window won’t go crashing down and break.

Step Five Now for those damned rivets. You will need both a ¼” and a 1/8” drill bit. You can also punch out the rivets, but drilling is far easier.

Step Six Locate your window motor near the bottom right hole in the door. There will be a rivet at the far end (closest to the car), two closer to the middle (about 4-5 inches from the end), then there are three or so closer to the middle of the door that also need to be removed. There are five (I think) rivets holding the motor and regulator to the door. There will be 5 more rivets are holding on a large metal brace to the upper left side of the door. This brace needs to come off in order for you to get the motor and regulator out of the door. So remove those 5 rivets, remove the metal brace, and simply pull the whole assembly from your door. If you have trouble getting the assembly out the hole in the door, make sure that the arm attached to the window track is in the up position. So the assembly should come out and a near 90 degree angle.

Step Seven Now its time to separate your motor from the arm that moves the window up and down. There are a number of smaller rivets, not sure how many, that hold the arm to the motor assembly. Simply drill all these out with a drill bit that is larger than 1/8”.

Step Eight Take your new motor and rivet or bolt (whichever you have) and reattach the arm to the motor in the same position you took it off the old one. Make sure the gears are matching up that are on the motor and the arm. Lube everything up good with some grease.

Step Nine You are now ready to put your new assembly back into your door. To do this, once again make sure that the assembly is at a 90-degree angle, or as close to this as you can get. Fit the assembly back into the door.

Step Ten Once it is in the door, position the wheel at the end of the arm back in the track that attaches to the bottom of the window.

Step Eleven Now here’s the fun part, reattaching the assembly to your door. You can either use bolts or rivets to reattach it (I used bolts because I didn’t want to have to deal with those damned rivets if I ever needed to change the motor again). Note: If you have some trouble lining up the holes, this probably means that that your arm that raises and lowers the window is too high. To fix this, plug in the motor, and lower the window a tiny bit at a time until the holes line up. Make sure your hold the motor while you do this.

Step Twelve After you have your assembly reattached to the door, plug it in and test it. Make sure that it goes all the way up and down without any hitches.

Step Thirteen Reattach the plastic if you so desire, put your door panel back on, and enjoy your now functional window.

I Scratched The Black Partition In Between The Windows Of My Car While Trying To Jimmy It Open. Is There A Product I Can Use To Repair It?
They Are Small Scratches But I Can See The Metal And I Don'T Want It To Rust.

Sure!

Since you just did it, you don't have to worry about cleaning out any rust that might have grown since the damage. If you did, you could scrub off any rust with a glass fiber pen (available in chip repair kits at auto parts stores).

You can apply touch-up paint to reseal the scratch and cover up the base metal so it is protected. With my newer car, I generally go to the dealership's parts counter (usually near the service bays) and buy a small bottle of touch-up paint. It's sold in 1-3 oz containers in a pen form or in a small bottle with a brush on the lid (like nail polish). You can buy it in auto parts stores as well, but for a newer car you may get a better match at the dealership.

Oh yeah... if you can find nail polish in the color you need, it also does a fine job of forming a quick protective coating (though I recommend the touch-up paint).

If you don't mind it being metal colored, you could just apply a coat of wax to the scratch regularly (every 2-3 months), but again... I'd go with the touch-up paint.

How Do You Repair A Crack In Your Car'S Windshield/Rain Shield?
Scenario: When Nikki Was Parking Her Car In The Parking Lot, She Noticed There Was A Crack In Her Windshield On Her Volvo. She Wants To Replace The Windshield, But She Doesn'T Know How? Should She Let The Car Repair Pros Do The Job Or Replace It Herself?

The repair people are saying that if the crack can be covered by a dollar bill the windshield can be repaired. Everybody uses the Novus system, which evacuates the crack and fills it with resin, then cures it with UV light. It takes about an hour and most windshield repair places will go wherever the car is parked and do the repair. The repair is virtually invisible (you can see it if you know where to look and look hard) and is generally guaranteed not to crack again for the life of the windshield. Here in Arizona, the Land of Rocks, we use the service a lot.

If the crack is larger than that the windshield has to be replaced. Definitely a job for a pro, it costs around $300 for most windshields. I have used Safelite, which offers prices and appointments on the web, and goes where the car is to do the work. Other companies may be as good or better, so feel free to shop around.
