My Car Stalled Out Yesterday And Wouldn'T Start Back Up, I Towed It To A Mechanic And He Replaced My Fuel Filter (I'M Guessing There Was A Plug) And It Started Running, Ran Fine, I Got It Home. Turned It On Today And It Started Right Up, Bucked Up And Down The Driveway A Few Times And It Went Well, But I Then Took It Around The Block To See If It Was Really Actually Running Right Again... About 5 Minutes Into It It Stalled Again. But It Started Right Back Up And I Got It Home. I Found Out At The Mechanics Yesterday That I Have A Cracked Header And He Said That Was A Good Chunk Of My Problem Because It Is Throwing Off The Sensors. Would That Little Crack Really Cause My Car To Stall Out Like That? Also Is Seems The Only Time It Stalls Back Out Is When I'M Coming To A Stop.
I'm assuming you have a car that was built in the past 20 years (and thus using electronic engine management). If enough outside air gets sucked into an exhaust header through a big crack, the car should run perfectly fine while it's still cold but once your engine warms up and your computer goes into "closed-loop" mode, your O2 sensors will get fooled into thinking you're engine's running too lean and the computer will then tell your fuel injectors to send more gas into your engine than it should, ruining your gas mileage and performance and possibly causing it to stall. If that's the case, then the way to get your car running temporarily until you can get it to a mechanic would be to simply disconnect all your O2 sensors from the wiring. This will cause your engine computer to only use default "open-loop" settings for your air/fuel mixture which isn't very gas efficient (or environmentally friendly), and you will also get a "check engine" light warning on your dashboard, but the car will at least run reliably.
